The ScrumMaster Training Interactive Case Study

You wait on hold for a couple minutes. The person you speak with is friendly, professional, experienced, and absolutely adamant that you can't and won't get admin access to your laptop. The organization's policy is clear: admin access is totally off-limits to users because all installed software needs to be approved through a rigorous process that includes cost justification, security audits, and vendor support contracts.

Okay. So your laptop is totally locked.

You've read that the ScrumMaster's job... your job... is to overcome obstacles. This seems like a big one and a good one to start with. As you are trying to get the person in IT help to grant you an exception, you realize that you might have to raise this with management. You start by asking the IT help person to put their manager on the line.

That goes nowhere quickly. The manager simply re-explains the policy and says that it's set at the level of the CIO.

Once you are off the phone you create a new folder: "Ongoing Obstacles" and write up a brief description about this problem and what you have done so far. But it's time to move on.

You decide to look for a team member to try to help you. After a bit of wandering around you see Jeremy and a bunch of other people coming out of a meeting room. AS you approach, Jeremy hails you and asks you to come meet someone. He introduces you to Karen and says that she will be responsible for showing you the system they're building. You decide that this is probably a good way to start meeting team members so you're pleased to...

go with Karen.
