Desk and Workstation Setup
You and Nick get in the elevator. As you are going through the office, you notice that there are people from many countries. It's easy to notice the folks of Indian, Chinese and African descent, but also you overhear some Eastern European accents. It's a very multi-cultural environment. You mention this to Nick. He says, "Yeah, we take pride on encouraging a very diverse workforce. Not just culturally, but age, and even professional backgrounds. We have all sorts of people here who didn't start out in high tech. Accountants, carpenters, even dancers!"
You're impressed. Nick shows you to your desk which is in a typical office cubicle with high walls. It's relatively spacious and "L" shaped with shelves mounted to the walls. You have a up-to-date looking laptop with a docking station, external keyboard and mouse and a nice external LCD monitor. You also have a desk phone, a small whiteboard, and a filing cabinet under the desk. The chair looks really comfortable, with a high back and lots of knobs and levers for adjusting it. Nick hands you a printed, corner-stapled booklet titled "New Hire Welcome Package". It's all the instructions, phone numbers, and policies you need to get started. You check the table of contents and see that there is a section for getting logged into your new workstation.
You log in. It's not totally pain-free, but not bad. You get your email set up, and there is a standard welcome message from the CEO - it's definitely not personal. Otherwise nothing. You notice that it's missing some of your favorite open-source software so you get onto the internet and start downloading. You start installing, but an error message pops up... you don't have administrative rights to your laptop! Uh oh!
